Steps You Can Take To Help Counter Human Trafficking

By Edward Stevens

Unfortunately, modern say slavery still exists. This is something that is propagated through the illegal trafficking of people. A lot of work has gone into stopping this practice, however, it is something that still happens. Given how wide and big this thing is, it is quite easy to feel overwhelmed as an individual about where to start or what to do but, there are things that you can do at a personal level to help end counter human trafficking.

Be informed about this practice and how it happens. Once you understand the situation, then you will be in a better position to stand up against it. There is so much information that is available online about this topic. Read up about different ways modern slavery happens. Also, find books on the topic and read about them. This will come in handy in helping you identify victims of this trade. Once you identify victims or even propagators, then report them to relevant authorities.

In addition, avoid companies that exploit their employees. Such companies pay minimal wages and do not have good working conditions. Stop buying from these companies. Instead, buy from companies that support ethical and fair trade methods. Do more research on companies whose products you use to see whether they are ethically run or not. Actively campaign for companies that exploit workers to stop exploitation.

Support survivors by buying products that they have made. This allows them to make an honest living and helps in supporting them to live a normal life by giving them a sustainable income. There are a number of sites that sell products that have been made by survivors.

Provide financial support to organizations that fight against this practice. This empowers the organizations to do a lot more. Most of these organizations do not have the resources they need to carry out large scale operations. But with financial support, they can be able to do a lot more than they are currently doing.

Most trafficked people find themselves in this situation as a result of the circumstances that they find themselves in. For instance, they might not have jobs or they might not be educated. In addition, they might not have good and healthy relationships that give them support that they need, therefore they might willingly give themselves up to be trafficked. By providing them with the resources that they need, you greatly minimize chances that cause them to get themselves into this situation.

It is a good idea to volunteer your time in organizations that fight against modern day slavery. Check out which nonprofits do this within your neighborhood. Check even with your Church. This will allow you to understand this issue well.

Once you are aware about this practice and have information about it, also let other people know about it. This way, they can also be involved in the fight against modern day slavery. Talk to people you work with, your family members and even students in local schools. You can even go ahead and start clubs on this issue.
